Security FAQs.

How do I create a strong password?

Strong passwords are complex, unique and contain a combination of symbols, uppercase letters and lowercase letters. Use these tips to make your passwords stronger and more secure:

  • Avoid using easy-to-guess passwords with common words, names or places. Instead, use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters and symbols to make a longer, more complex password.
  • Use two-factor or multi-factor authentication for an extra layer of security, whenever possible.
  • Don’t re-use passwords for multiple sites or accounts.
  • Keep your passwords to yourself! Neighborhood Trust will never ask you for your password.

How do I recognize and prevent social engineering attacks?

Social engineering is a malicious or fraudulent attempt to steal personal information via some form of communication. This may come in many forms, like email, text message, phone calls and other methods. Scammers may offer something that’s “too good to be true” or try to pressure you with a false sense of urgency.

In general, avoid providing any sensitive personal information in response to unsolicited outreach, whether by phone, text message or email. Do not click or download any suspicious links, files or attachments from senders you do not know or did not specifically request.

How can I protect my devices?

Make sure to check for and install the latest system software to help keep your computer, smart phone and other internet-connected devices as secure as possible. Using a combination of anti-malware and anti-virus software can also help keep your devices safe from malicious files and other threats.

What’s the best way to browse securely?

Whenever possible, use secure and encrypted websites on the internet. You can look for the lock symbol near to the URL bar on your screen to see whether a site is encrypted or not. Make sure to always look for the lock symbol before sharing sensitive personal information online. Additionally, avoid providing your sensitive data over shared or public WI-FI networks, even on secure websites.

Avoid fraudulent business practices.

How do I recognize and prevent social engineering attacks?

These scammers make telephone calls impersonating legitimate collectors or lenders. In these calls, they fraudulently attempt to collect actual and phantom debts.

These calls are not being made by Neighborhood Trust or anyone affiliated with us. These fraudulent debt collectors call to harass and threaten consumers in an effort to intimidate or con people into making payments for debts, including debts that do not actually exist, that have previously been paid, or that are owed to a different collection agency.

Warning signs include:

  • They threaten you with violence, arrest or wage garnishment
  • They refuse to provide you with your loan agreement or history
  • They attempt to collect an amount that is different than what you owe
